PORTLAND, Ore. — Sydney Dorner is a reporter at KGW News in Portland, Oregon. She recently joined the team in November 2023.

Her career began at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic at WICS Channel 20 in Springfield, Illinois reporting live and in-studio. Black Lives Matter protests and Trump rallies were some of her first live stories.

During her two years in the capital city, Sydney also covered breaking news at the Illinois State Capitol and Springfield City Council, as well as personal stories told by Springfield’s homeless living in tents.

Sydney’s interest in journalism was first sparked by the storytelling she heard in hip-hop music. As a teen growing up in New York City, she listened to the lyrics of artists like Kanye West and Pharrell, while also studying the violin at Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program.

Her love for music journalism only grew as a student at Temple University. There she interned as a music correspondent and talk show co-host on Temple University Television station’s first hip-hop culture and music television show. Sydney is a 2019 Mid-Atlantic College/University Emmy Nominee for her work as a multimedia journalist & editor of “Philadelphia Neighborhoods on TV.”

While studying abroad at the Temple Japan Campus, Sydney interned at the Japan Times as a staff writer. She wrote arts and culture articles, weekly wrap-ups on trending music videos, and interviewed upcoming artists with one story going viral on the internet.

The New York Native is a huge foodie and can't wait to explore Portland’s restaurant scene.

Sydney picked up rock climbing as a New Year's resolution and is excited to continue the sport here on the West Coast.
